Arrival
Arrival, the 2016 science fiction film directed by Denis Villeneuve, is a first-contact story in which a linguist named Louise Banks, played by Amy Adams, learns the written language of the aliens who have landed on Earth and discovers that mastering that language rewires her perception of time. The film explains itself through 3 core ideas: the heptapods' circular script, the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis, and a time loop that only makes sense once the script is understood. Everything else, the military pressure, the conspiracy, the grief, follows from those 3 ideas.

The film is easy to miss at first, because it plays like a slow procedural for its first 40 minutes before it detonates. That is deliberate. Villeneuve built his career on films that reward a second viewing, a path he walked in front of audiences at Cannes Film Festival, where his work has been programmed in recent years, and where Film Festivals generally have been the proving ground for the kind of patient, structural filmmaking that Arrival belongs to. The craft of film, end to end, is what makes the ending land instead of feeling like a trick: the script is never a puzzle box, it is the plot's engine.
What the heptapod language actually is
The heptapod language is a circular, logographic writing system with no direction, no beginning and no end. The aliens, the heptapods, communicate through 2 channels: a spoken form called the logograms and a written form of ink circles, called the "logographs" in the film's terminology, each one a self-contained symbol. Louise's breakthrough comes when she stops trying to translate the ink and starts to feel it. Once she can produce a logograph herself, her brain begins to parse time the way the heptapods do, all at once. The language is not a code to crack; it is a cognitive technology, a way of thinking installed inside a human mind.
How the time loop works
The time loop works because the script is non-linear, and once Louise reads it fluently, her memories stop being a recording and become a landscape she can walk in any direction. The film shows this in 2 movements. Early on, Louise hears a phone call from a dying man who says "He's gone" and she has no context for it. Late in the film she learns that the man is Ian Donnelly, played by Jeremy Renner, her partner, and that she has already lived the 30 years between their meeting and his death from cancer. The 1980s-style newspaper headlines, the daughter Hannah's birthday, the hospital room: all of it is future from the film's opening and past from its closing. Arrival does not reverse the timeline the way Memento reversed the editing; it makes the whole timeline legible, and the character chooses to live it anyway.
Why the heptapods came: the 3000 year gift
The heptapods came because they need help 3000 years in the future, when their own species faces extinction and they require a tool only humans can give them: a way to think outside time. The film's answer to the question "why are they here" is therefore not a weapon and not a message, but a request. Each of the 12 heptapod ships on Earth carries 2 heptapods, and each ship is a mirror of the others, so the same conversation happens in 12 places simultaneously. Louise's line to the general, that the heptapods show her the future because they need the future, is the thesis statement of the entire second act. The "gift" framing matters: the film insists that contact is cooperation, not conquest.
The ending, explained in one pass
The ending is a choice, and the film tells you it is a choice in the final scene, where Louise watches Hannah grow up in a memory she has already made. Reading the sequence in order, the logic runs like this. The heptapods give humans their language. The language gives humans non-linear time. Louise uses non-linear time to live a marriage and a daughter she knows will end. She then joins a global network of linguists, shown in the final montage, who use the same gift to solve the heptapods' future problem, a cure that is only fully spelled out in the last 2 minutes of the film. The heptapods get their tool, humanity gets its perception, and Louise keeps a grief she could not avoid and would not trade. That is the whole ending, and it is a single decision repeated across a decade.

What the film says about free will
The film says free will is not the ability to change the future; it is the ability to choose a future you already know. Louise is the test case, and her answer is yes. The Sapir-Whorf hypothesis, the idea that the language you speak shapes the thoughts you can have, is the engine: the heptapod language does not describe a different reality, it enables a different relationship to reality. Determinism in Arrival is not a cage. It is a map, and the character walks the map on purpose, which is why the last shot, her face as she watches a memory that has not happened to her yet, reads as peace instead of tragedy. The film's argument is that knowing everything and still choosing the same life is the strongest form of agency the story can offer.
